City crews have completed application of anti-ice brine pre-treatment to arterial roads and bridges. Once freezing rain begins falling, the brine pre-treatment will rehydrate, preventing ice from bonding with the pavement while starting the melting process. At that time, 20 material spreading crews will begin patrolling routes applying granular salt pre-wet with brine as needed to trouble spots.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for southeast Nebraska including Lincoln/Lancaster County in effect from noon to 9 p.m. today. Freezing rain is expected during the afternoon and evening commute, resulting in slippery conditions on sidewalks, roads and bridges. Total ice accumulations of a light glaze are expected.
A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads. Slow down and use caution while driving and be prepared for reduced visibility at times.
