City of Lincoln Winter Operations Update Monday, January 25, 2021 at 5:00 AM

A snow emergency is in effect. 

Parking Bans: Beginning at 8:00 AM Monday, January 25, 2021, parking will be banned on both sides of all emergency snow routes, bus and school routes and major arterial streets.  A map of these routes is available at snow.lincoln.ne.gov.

Residential Parking Ban: Beginning at 8:00 AM Monday, January 25, 2021, a residential parking ban will be in effect.  This is the first time this new residential parking ban process is in effect. Parking will be banned on the odd-numbered sides of residential streets – that’s generally the south and west sides of the street. Parking will be permitted on the even sides of residential streets.

When a residential parking ban is required, parking is banned on only one side of the street. The sides of the street will not switch like in previous years. During residential bans, parking on odd-numbered sides of the street will be banned in odd-numbered years like 2021.  Parking on even-numbered sides of the street will be banned in even-numbered years.

City operations: Twenty material spreaders are patrolling arterial streets and applying granular salt pre-wet with brine. The City will activate more than 100 City and contractor crews to begin plowing over the next several hours as the storm intensifies. Residential plowing is anticipated to begin around 8:00 AM and will require multiple passes during and after the storm.

National Weather Service: A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 6:00 AM Monday to 3:00 AM Tuesday. Snowfall amounts could range from six to 15 inches. Northeasterly winds will blow at 15 to 25 mph during the event, with gusts as high as 30 to 35 mph at times.

Weather conditions: Heavy snow is expected. Areas of blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility.

Street conditions: Snow will affect the morning commute and will heavily impact the evening commute. Arterial streets are expected to remain snow covered most of the day as the hourly snowfall rates may overwhelm City resources. Winter driving conditions are in effect.
